A new Emerging Paradigm

A Regenerative Shift

I am thrilled to announce that I will deliver a keynote address this Thursday in Santiago, Chile, sharing a panel with the esteemed Bill Reed. The following is a summary of the insights and perspectives I will be presenting. I will explore the critical shifts necessary for a new paradigm to emerge, addressing the inevitability of Horizon 1’s self-termination and discussing why Horizon 3 is emerging as a regenerative paradigm.

I invite you to explore the profound nature of regeneration, a concept that is as essential to our existence as the very cells within our bodies. Every seven years, the human body undergoes a remarkable transformation — every cell is replaced, renewing our physical form.

Why does this happen?

Because each cell has a lifespan; to sustain life, old cells must die so that new ones may take their place. This cycle of death and rebirth is not just a biological process; it is a dance of co-evolution between the end and the beginning, between what was and what will be.

Now, let’s consider the soil in a forest. It partakes in its own dance of regeneration. The dying vegetation falls, and decomposes, and from this composted earth, new life emerges. This is nature’s way of teaching us the fundamental truth about existence: everything is in a perpetual state of becoming, of transitioning from one form to another.

In this light, let’s delve into the Three Horizons framework proposed by Bill Sharpe. This model beautifully illustrates how societal systems evolve, mirroring the regenerative processes we observe in nature.

Horizon One represents our current systems and structures — familiar yet faltering under the weight of their own unsustainability. Like the cells of our body, they have brought us this far, but they are not designed to last forever.

Horizon One is self-terminating due to its unsustainable energy practices, reliance on escalating debt, and violation of planetary boundaries. As fossil fuel extraction becomes costlier and debt levels unsustainable, this paradigm faces a critical decline, unable to adapt to the ecological limits it has surpassed. We now find ourselves at the critical juncture where Horizon One is reaching its natural end.

It is self-terminating, not out of failure, but because it has served its purpose. It is time for us to consciously design Horizon Three, drawing inspiration from the regenerative core of life itself. This new horizon is not just an opportunity; it is a necessity, as inevitable as the cycle of life that flows through our cells.

As we stand here, on the precipice of transformation, let us recognize that in seven years, none of the cells that currently comprise me will exist, yet I will still stand. This is the co-evolution of matter, energy, and consciousness. We are not just participants in this process; we are creators. We have the power to shape the next horizon, to mold a future that echoes the sustainable, regenerative rhythms of the Earth itself.

Let us embrace this opportunity to design a new horizon, understanding that what we see today will not be here in the future, but what we do today will shape tomorrow. Let this be our legacy: that we saw the dance of life and death, of decay and growth, and chose to evolve with it, to lead it, and to transform it.
