A perspective reminder, that white fragile dot is us.

The meta-crisis represents the most profound challenge and opportunity our civilization has ever faced.

The End of an Era

Since we first ventured out of rainforests to cross savannas and ultimately conquer every corner of the globe, humanity has always encountered crises.

These crises, however, were not global; they were localized, contained within their own bounds, and thus, manageable. Each crisis was a chapter in our collective story, a challenge met and overcome within a specific context. But now, we face a different kind of crisis — one that is global, pervasive, and interconnected, challenging us to rethink our relationship with the world and each other.

We now face a convergence of multiple interconnected crises — poly-crisis — that spans the entire planet. The severity and all-encompassing nature of this poly-crisis create a combined, integral convergence of interdependencies, which we are coming to understand as the meta-crisis. This meta-crisis represents a profound challenge, highlighting the intricate web of interrelated problems that demand a holistic and transformative response.

This predicament undoubtedly marks the end of an era, signaling a profound shift from the world we know. Given the complexity, we are not in for a smooth transition. This is not merely an era of change, but a change in era.

How long and profound this shift will be, and how it will unfold, we cannot yet know. It is a time of deep uncertainty and transformation, where the old paradigms fall away, making room for new ways of being and understanding.

But this is not merely the greatest paradigm shift we have ever faced; it is a truly global paradigm shift. For the first time in history, we are experiencing a transformation that transcends borders and touches every aspect of our collective existence. This shift challenges us to rethink and redefine our fundamental ways of being on a planetary scale.

Ubiquitous in its reach, this transformation will unfold like a cascade of falling dominoes, touching every corner of the globe in a very short period. It will permeate all aspects of life, manifesting as a cultural, spiritual, social, economic, and ecological event. This profound challenge and opportunity before us is a call to awaken to our true humanity and interconnectedness.

Defining the Paradigm

A paradigm encompasses the values, common purpose, and direction shared by a society. It is the framework through which we understand the world and our place in it.

Our current paradigm, steeped in the ethos of consumerism and individualism, has ushered in remarkable advancements, yet it has also sown the seeds of significant fragmentation. This relentless pursuit of material wealth and personal gain has fractured the very fabric of our interconnected existence, leaving us adrift in a sea of isolation and disconnection. While we have achieved much, we have also lost sight of the unity that binds us, the deeper truths that weave us into a coherent whole.

The meta-crisis poses a profound halt in the cyclical dance of life, a pivotal moment in its perpetual renewal. It is a balancing act that opens us to the possibility of a broader, more loving, and unifying cosmic vision.

This moment demands a paradigm shift — a new vision that unites us all and breaks free from the dynamic energies of separation. It invites us to transcend the fractures of our existence and embrace a deeper interconnectedness, honoring the intricate web that binds us.

This is not just a call for change but an invitation to a profound awakening, to step into a world where the rhythms of life are celebrated in harmony and unity.

The Primordial Energy

Our predicament lies in our disconnection — from nature, from each other, and from ourselves. Yet, the very essence of our humanity is rooted in togetherness.

Throughout history, it is through collaboration and the spirit of unity that we have survived and thrived. This primordial energy, what Goethe called Urphänomen, or primordial phenomenon, is central to his scientific thought.

The Urphänomen, akin to the Dharma (cosmic law), Syntropy, Tau (Dao or Tao), and Mauri ora, is the driving force that has propelled us forward. It represents a fundamental underlying principle or pattern discernible within the diversity of natural phenomena. This formant of humanity, this intrinsic principle of interconnectedness and unity, serves as the foundation of our existence. It is the bedrock upon which all life is built, an invisible thread that weaves together the fabric of reality, binding us to one another and to the world around us in a sacred dance of interdependence.

Tau, also known as Dao or Tao in Chinese philosophy, refers to the fundamental nature of the universe and the way or path one should follow to align with this natural order. It embodies the principles of harmony, balance, and the flow of life, guiding individuals to live in accordance with the underlying patterns and forces of the natural world.

Similarly, the concept of “Mauri ora” from Maori tradition speaks to the vitality and life force that connects all beings.

Syntropy, the tendency towards order and organization in nature, complements this idea. It is the energy of collaboration, the spirit of togetherness, and the essence of our collective survival.

Primordial energy courses through the veins of life itself, weaving us into a web of interdependence with one another and the natural world.

Though momentarily obscured by the modern world, this ancient force lies dormant within us, awaiting the spark of recognition to reignite its flame. By attuning ourselves to this primordial energy, we can begin to mend the fractures that have sundered our connections, restoring the wholeness that is our true nature. This journey of reconnection is not merely a return to our roots but a profound awakening to the inherent unity that binds all life. Embracing this interconnected fabric, we rediscover the essence of our being and the sacred dance of interdependence that holds the cosmos together.

A New Paradigm for All

A Test of Our Collective Will

Schmachtenberger describes the meta-crisis as an intricate web of interrelated crises, where each poly-crisis contributes to the overarching systemic breakdown. These interconnected crises amplify and compound each other, creating a complex and overwhelming global emergency.

Jonathan Rowson in his thought-provoking work “Tasting the Pickle: Ten Flavours of Meta-Crisis” sees the meta-crisis as a conundrum that lies between and beyond the current emergencies, challenging us to transcend the existing paradigms and emerge stronger.

He frames the meta-crisis as a pivotal junction where the global system either evolves to a higher state of resilience, complexity, and elegance or collapses under the weight of its own contradictions.

Both Schmachtenberger and Rowson envision the meta-crisis as a pivotal evolutionary crossroads, a moment ripe with the potential for profound transformation. It is a juncture where the possibilities of collapse and unprecedented growth and unity coexist, urging us to navigate this delicate balance with wisdom and foresight.

This delicate threshold calls for a deep, conscious engagement, inviting us to transcend the fragmentation of our current paradigm and embrace a new way of being that honors the interconnectedness of all life.

The meta-crisis presents itself as our greatest crucible, a profound examination of our humanity. It challenges us to delve deep into our collective soul, confront long-standing fractures, and emerge with a renewed sense of unity and purpose. This moment is not merely a test of resilience but a sacred invitation to rediscover our interconnectedness and transform our world through compassion and wisdom.

At this delicate threshold, we are called to transcend fragmentation, embrace a new way of being that honors the interconnectedness of all life, and co-create a future where our shared humanity is celebrated. It is a call to awaken to the intricate dance of separation and reunion, guiding us towards greater harmony and wholeness.

Navigating the Meta-Crisis: Cultivating Profound Comprehension

In a time of unprecedented complexity and change, the need for profound comprehension and sense-making of the meta-crisis has never been more urgent. Our capacity to understand and navigate this intricate phenomenon is crucial, as the meta-crisis possesses its own dynamics and feedback loops, constantly evolving and radicalizing itself into deeper separateness. It embodies the totality of division, drawing its power from the very disconnection it perpetuates.

We are now in a period of exponential intensification, where the meta-crisis is not merely solidifying but calcifying into a rigid, unyielding structure. This process creates a vicious cycle — a negative spiral — wherein increased separation breeds further radicalization.

It mirrors the horizon One of Bill Sharpe’s framework, radicalizing itself to sustain its power and existence. This entrenchment in separateness ensures its continuity, feeding off the fragmentation and isolation it engenders. In this way, the meta-crisis perpetuates a self-sustaining loop of division and alienation, reinforcing its hold on our collective reality.

To truly understand and address this evolving meta-crisis, we must cultivate a deep engagement with the interconnected forces at play. This requires not only sense-making but also the capacity to transcend surface-level perceptions and delve into the profound shifts needed for genuine transformation.

The Path forward

Understanding the meta-crisis as an opportunity to co-evolve invites us to comprehend our existence both within and beyond. This transformation begins within the essence of our human soul, extending to a “more than human” interdependency that transcends our current selves, reaching future generations and aligning with nature, our greatest ally.

The meta-crisis encompasses a vast field, yet it offers only a single passage through. We must inter-be — reconciling from within — and inter-become — embarking on a journey that extends beyond. This interplay of reconciliation invites us to acknowledge and ultimately transform our separation through a deep process of inter-being.

Through this profound reconciliation, we can transform the meta-crisis into a profound opportunity for unity and regeneration. In this way, we can turn a time of crisis into a moment of collective awakening, embracing the interconnectedness that defines our true nature.

The meta-crisis is a call to awaken to our shared humanity, to the intricate dance of separation and reunion that defines our existence, and to steer our collective journey towards a future of greater harmony and wholeness.
